MY NAME IS POPPY KEY AND I'M AN ABSTRACT ARTIST FROM BAYSIDE IN MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA.
London born and bred, some of my fondest childhood memories are of wandering around the Tate Gallery in awe, for hours on end with my Art Teacher Mother and spending all my pocket money obsessively collecting modern art postcards. Rothko, Picasso, Pollock and Matisse were my childhood heroes and where my passion for colour and abstraction began.
When I graduated from my degree in History of Art & Design (Manchester, UK), my first job was in a commercial Art Gallery in St. James', the hub of London's Art Scene. I never thought I'd be good enough to "make" it as an actual Artist, so I thought the next best thing was to be a Curator. Which never happened, of course but blow me down I did become an Artist, eventually!
I've always had some sort of creative project on the go, but I started painting regularly, from our kitchen table, during the long Covid Lockdown of 2020. Painting was my form of meditation and it kept me sane when the whole world was going mad around me. When I paint, I get out of my head and into my heart. I always put music on loud and get into my creative zone, usually dancing away as I work, in an almost trance-like state. Hours can pass without me even noticing. Since then, I've painted almost daily and often late into the night. It's not "work", it's just who I am and what I do. It's my passion and my love. I feel honoured to be able to share what comes from my heart with you.
The purpose of my work is to make my Collectors feel something, bring joy to their lives and colour and happiness on a canvas into their homes.
